Audiology and Hearing Aid Services Q & A

Pacific ENT

How does Pacific ENT test hearing?

Pacific ENT uses a variety of examination methods to determine if you have hearing loss, what type of hearing loss you have, and the extent of the loss. Most of these tests require you to listen for certain sounds and respond in a specific way. However, some hearing tests may not require a response.

How does a hearing aid work?

A hearing aid is a small device that helps you hear better. Most hearing aids include three parts: a microphone, amplifier, and speaker. Sounds enter the hearing aid through the microphone, where they’re converted to an electrical signal. This signal is sent to the amplifier, where it’s made louder. Finally, the signals reach your ear through the speaker.

What types of hearing aids are available?

Several types of hearing aids are available to meet the needs of different patients. Types of hearing aids available from Pacific ENT include:

  • Behind the ear: Behind the ear hearing aids have a hard plastic case located behind the ear. This case is connected to a plastic earmold that fits inside the ear.
  • In the ear: In the ear hearing aids fit completely inside the outer ear and are less obvious than a behind the ear hearing aid. They’re appropriate for mild to severe hearing loss.
  • In the canal: In the canal hearing aids fit almost entirely in the ear canal and are barely noticeable.
  • Completely in the canal: Completely in the canal hearing aids are small enough to fit completely inside the ear canal and are nearly invisible to others.

Each type of hearing aid offers different benefits for patients. Dr. Chew or Dr. Louie will be able to help you compare your options and choose the design that’s best for your needs.

How much do hearing aids cost?

The cost of hearing aids varies considerably based on the type of hearing aid you select, as well as your health insurance. The staff at Pacific ENT will be able to provide you with detailed information about the cost of different types of hearing aids so you can make the right choice.
